Paracentric Inversions Found in Prenatal Diagnosis
نویسندگان
چکیده
Inversions are balanced rearrangements of chromosomes, and the vast majority of paracentric inversions seem to be harmless. The risk of having a phenotypically abnormal child for carriers of paracentric inversions due to the production of unbalanced gametes resulting from recombination during meiotic crossover has been thought to be low. However, a few cases of abnormal offspring due to classic recombination of inversion have been described. Spontaneous abortion, infertility, and mental retardation and/or congenital malformation of offspring have also been reported among paracentric inversion carriers. In this study, we characterized paracentric inversions identified in 10 cases observed in prenatal diagnosis at our center during a five-year period. A positive correlation between crossing over within heterozygous pericentric inversions and reduced egg hatch of Drosophila females.
XTENSIVE chromosomal polymorphism, probably due to pericentric inverE sions, has been reported in animals as dissimilar as grasshoppers (WHITE 1958) and mice ( OHNO et al. 1966). Inversion polymorphism is also prevalent in natural populations of many Drosophila species, but rarely are the inversions pericentric. The infrequency with which pericentric as compared with paracentric inversions are ...
متن کاملAnopheles darlingi polytene chromosomes: revised maps including newly described inversions and evidence for population structure in Manaus
Salivary gland polytene chromosomes of 4th instar Anopheles darlingi Root were examined from multiple locations in the Brazilian Amazon. Minor modifications were made to existing polytene photomaps. These included changes to the breakpoint positions of several previously described paracentric inversions and descriptions of four new paracentric inversions, two on the right arm of chromosome 3 an...
متن کاملRevisiting the Impact of Inversions in Evolution: From Population Genetic Markers to Drivers of Adaptive Shifts and Speciation?
There is a growing appreciation that chromosome inversions affect rates of adaptation, speciation, and the evolution of sex chromosomes. Comparative genomic studies have identified many new paracentric inversion polymorphisms. Population models suggest that inversions can spread by reducing recombination between alleles that independently increase fitness, without epistasis or coadaptation. Are...
متن کاملNineteen paracentric chromosomal inversions in mice.
Using mutagens on sperm and spermatids we have produced nineteen chromosomal inversions in mice. The levels of radiation and chemical mutagen we used induced inversions in about one per cent of the animals screened. Nine inversions have been transmitted through successive generations, and the particular frequency of first meiotic anaphase bridges manifested by each inversion remained constant. ...
متن کاملMeiotic exchange and segregation in female mice heterozygous for paracentric inversions.
Inversion heterozygosity has long been noted for its ability to suppress the transmission of recombinant chromosomes, as well as for altering the frequency and location of recombination events. In our search for meiotic situations with enrichment for nonexchange and/or single distal-exchange chromosome pairs, exchange configurations that are at higher risk for nondisjunction in humans and other...
